Paul Orfalea did the exact opposite and became massively wealthy.

His Kinkos Photocopy Centers is a great example of a low-tech business that gained an edge through smart thinking. He  identified a narrow niche, targeting just college students, and built his business around just them (initially). This resulted in his offering products, services in locations near his target clients, and hours of operation that made these customers dedicated fans, even though his prices were a little higher than just about everyone else.
