If you are interested in doing Public Speaking to attract new clients and customers, creating a “signature talk” can be an essential element.
Although an effective Signature Talk will sell your products and services (at the end), it is NOT a sales presentation.
Instead, your Signature Talk is what you want to be known for. It incorporates your brand message (what you stand for), with a clear point-of-view and your own personal story, which validates why you are credible to be having such insights as yo are presenting in this talk.
It’s a way to position yourself as an expert so people are comfortable and motivated to buy your products and services.
You may tweak your signature talk for the different audiences you speak with, but the core of your talk will always remain essentially the same.
For example, motivational speaker Zig Ziglar did thousands of talks over more than 30 years. Yet the essence of his talk — his “Signature Talk” based on his first book, “See You At The Top,” with such aphorisms as, “What you need is a checkup from the neck up,” and, “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want,” remained at the center of each talk.
Zig’s personal story of how he raised himself from extreme poverty to superstardom was a hallmark of every talk. Yet, stories from his many travels and from the hundreds of thousands of people he met over the years, kept the content relevant and fresh, even for those who had seen him many times.
Of course, a Signature Talk can be molded for just about any product and industry.
I’ve heard a wonderful one by a podiatrist — who connected her story of how she got interested in “feet” to some of the amazing insights and discoveries she’s made through her work, and why many of the posture and foot problems we have can be easily resolved by visiting a clinic like hers.
A Signature Talk is a powerful marketing tool, because it combines your personal passion with stories (we are drawn to storytelling) — and then uses them to drive home a powerful point, which resolves with the purchase of your products or services.
Because a Signature Talk will be repeated, you will eventually become more and more effective at moving your audience through this powerful talk.
